The sole purpose of learning in the classroom is to promote learning outside of the classroom. This is only possible if students feel safe, valued, and understood. My role as a teacher is to ensure that students have all of the tools necessary for success. This starts with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. I must create a learning environment in which students’ basic needs are met before they can progress to stages such as self-esteem and self-actualization. Once students reach the stage where they are ready to learn, I will look to research-based methods to implement best practice in the classroom. The most important thing to take into consideration is a positive relationship between the teacher and the student, and this begins on day one. I will inform students that my expectations are high and assure them that I will provide everything they need in order to meet these expectations. I want students to develop a deep appreciation for learning, and this can only be done using a student-centered approach. I know that my students are capable of so much more than they can think or imagine, and my job is to help them realize their potential by incorporating student interests, focusing on different learning styles, and providing differentiation in the classroom every single day.
To create a classroom that is most conducive to learning, I will implement instructional practices such as Backward Design, teaching for mastery, rigor, multiple and varied assessments, gradual release of responsibility/scaffolding, use of technology, and formative assessments that inform my instruction moving forward. It is also important to consider theorists such as Alfie Kohn who believe that students should be involved in every decision that affects them. Classrooms should become communities where students are working together toward one goal. This sense of community is formed through practice in collaboration by flexible grouping and cooperative learning. Prior to this, I will teach expectations/procedures, including seamless transitions, so as to provide a structured environment for which students may practice these skills.
I will manage my classroom in a way that is proactive rather than reactive. I have to be able to anticipate problems before they arise and take preventative measures so that the flow of learning is not interrupted. I will make sure to be consistent so that students know what to expect, and I will discipline in a way that maintains student dignity. I will utilize behavior management strategies such as PBIS, proximity management, reminders of the procedures, and de-escalation. I will also handle small issues in class, implementing tier 1, 2, and 3 intervention plans when necessary.
In all things, I know that I am constantly learning and growing with my students. In order to emphasize professional development, I will connect with other teachers in my content area so as to share ideas and learn from one another. I will also attend seminars, take classes, and read new research so that I can continue growing in my pedagogical knowledge of my content area as well as best teaching practices. I plan to join the Freedom Writers Foundation as well as the Nebraska Council for Teachers of English to do just that. All of this will help me to better serve my students and be the best teacher I possibly can be.
